Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about this quote:
“Those who say yes are rewarded by the adventures they have. Those who say no are rewarded by the safety they attain.”
What I like the most about this is the implication that either choice leads to something good; both outcomes are positive and meaningful.
Similarly, Chris recently posted the following:
“Survive vs. Thrive – it’s up to you”
You can take this to mean a few different things, but I like how survival is actually part of both outcomes. It’s a good reminder that our choice is rarely ever between life and death, it’s between something good and something great.
The first quote reminds me of the “say no to everything” comfort challenge in Tim Ferriss’ “The 4-Hour Workweek.” The point there, though, is to become comfortable avoiding extraneous tasks so that you can commit your time to more important things – greater adventures, perhaps. That quote is provocative, though; challenges the way I’ve thought about safety… and risk.
You’ve always gotta bring it back to Ferriss, eh? 🙂
Interesting take, though I still interpret the quote primarily as another variation on the idea that we usually overvalue the effective difference of our options. And by we I probably mean me
